Five Against One
Why not give yourself a challenge every now and then?
There is a dear teacher at the boys school who is also raising her, not two, but three kids solo. One day in passing conversation she had mentioned that she had never had a manicure or pedicure. "Whoa, whoa, whoa. Hold on. Back the bus up. You have never what?!?" You would have thought that it was something major, but to my feet that is major!
So for her birthday I put a certificate in her mailbox for a evening to herself to be pampered and I would watch her kids. We looked at our calendars and decided that Tuesday would be the best night for us. Now, I didn't attempt to go totally superwoman, so I did call on the support of Dominos to do the cooking. However, Amy Hines did do the baking with some cookies after the pie!
One word would describe a four, five, two six year olds, and a nine year old. Loud. They all sat up to the counter to eat the pizza. Telling jokes, laughing, snorting, being kids. It was cute. I'm writing this 24 hours later...the toy room...not so cute, but I have informed the boys that spring cleaning is in full effect Saturday morning. Eyes rolled back, shoulders slouched, and simultaneous, "Yes ma'am." Anyways, back to the story. Bax and Gracie spent the majority of the time in his room with him showing her his prize possessions in his closet. Alex and Tripp went through all the costumes in the toy room, then legos, then played air hockey, basketball, sword fought all in a span of five minutes. It was like two taz manian devils going through the toy room. Wow. Raelyn sat at the counter and did her math homework. I learned one thing. I must take a Math refresher course or hire a really good Math tutor because I had not a clue about Algebra.
Miss Mandy arrived with her "Uptown Manhattan" fingers and toes and smiling ear to ear while wearing the disposable flip flops. She embraced me with a hug and a thank you, but her smile was all worth it!
Quite possibly the cutest thing of the evening, after the kitchen was cleaned up, homework complete, and kiddos fast asleep, I was walking in to do my final goodnight check before turning in myself was this...
Gracie brought Bax a framed picture that she keeps by her bed at night from his third birthday party last year and he was holding tight to it. She also brought the green hedgehog which he in turn gave her a rabbit he scored from this past weekend in Hilton Head. Innocence. How can I possibly bottle it up forever? That's right, a picture so I can remember in those not so innocent trying times.
